Set in Alabama in the 1880s, The Miracle Worker tells the story of real-life Medal of Freedom winner Helen Keller, born blind and deaf, and Annie Sullivan, the extraordinary teacher who taught her to communicate with the world.

William Gibson originally wrote “The Miracle Worker” as a teleplay in 1957.  The theatrical production opened on Oct 19, 1959 at the Playhouse Theatre under the auspices of Fred Coe.  Arthur Penn directed a cast which included Anne Bancroft (Annie Sullivan) & Patty Duke (Helen Keller).
