Set in a shabby tavern outside Boston in 1828, "A Touch of the Poet" introduces an Irish immigrant who fancies himself as a distinguished gentleman despite all evidence to the contrary. Down-on-his-luck, he finds himself in a quandary when his daughter falls for the son of a wealthy American, and he insists on maintaining his European gentility.
For The Record:
”A Touch of the Poet” originally opened on Oct 2 1958 at the Helen Hayes (210 W 46th St) under the auspices of The Producers Theatre/Robert Whitehead. Harold Clurman staged the production which featured Helen Hayes, Eric Portman & Kim Stanley. It has been revived on B’way twice, in 1967 and 1977.
