NewYorkRep, will present two industry reading of "Chasing Gods" by Paris Crayton III on Mon Nov 18 at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the Manhattan Theatre Club Studios (311 W 43rd St.)  Directed by Markus Potter (Producing Artistic Director of NewYorkRep), the cast features Portia, Larry Marshall, Danny Johnston, Jordan Boatman, Aigner Mizzelle & Cecil Blutcher. Monday's presentation is presented in preparation for a fall 2020 World Premiere to be presented by NewYorkRep. How do we respond to hate speech? How do we react to intolerance? How do we react in a way that doesn't make us like the people we think are wrong? These are some of the questions raised in "Chasing Gods," part of a series Crayton calls the "black faith cycle." Set in the summer of 2016, after the Pulse nightclub shooting where the country witnessed the deadliest, recorded act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community. From the pulpit of Holy Ground Baptist Church, Pastor Deirdre Curtis condemns the tragedy's victims in the name of God and Christianity. As if Deidra's controlling, judgmental ways have not already alienated herself from her husband, Emmanuel, and her two children, Elijah and Olivia, the loss of one of their own, further strain the fragile family.
