HAIR will celebrate 50th Anniversary at La MaMa

The musical HAIR, which began life downtown at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater in October, 1967 (prior to its debut on B'way in April, 1968) will celebrate its 50th anniversary and its East Village roots in a one-time-only special event at La MaMa (66 E 4 St) on Sat, Jan 21 at 2:00 PM, it has been announced by Mia Yoo, La MaMa’s Artistic Director. With Book and Lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and Music by Galt MacDermot, HAIR is the American Tribal Rock Musical that helped define its generation, and the anti-war movement in the 1960's. Creators James Rado and Galt MacDermot will be on hand to share their personal stories with the audience.  (Their collaborator Gerome Ragni died in 1991).  The event will be attended by special guests, and feature a pre-recorded video from both HAIR producer Michael Butler, and original cast member Walter Michael Harris.  The event will also celebrate Mr Rado’s 85th birthday. The event is presented as part of La MaMa’s COFFEEHOUSE CHRONICLES series, which explores the history and development of Off-Off-Broadway, part history lesson and part portrait of downtown artists and their work.
