  • The first issue of THEATRICAL INDEX was published on November 9, 1964. It was the brainchild of Price Berkley, who was working in publicity and as a personal manager when he saw a need for information specifically geared to theatre professionals. To stay up-to-date with the constantly-changing Broadway production schedule, Price devised a publication short on gossip and long on facts. He started what has been called "The Bible" of the American theatre.

As the theatre community's love of the INDEX grew and the theatre landscape changed...the INDEX grew too. Price added the Road Tours, Off-Broadway and then Regional and Special attractions to the listings. The INDEX became a must-have for anyone working, or trying to work, in the theatre.

In 2007, Steve Bebout, a longtime employee at THEATRICAL INDEX, took over as the publication's Editor in Chief. Steve continues the tradition of excellence that Price started over 40 years ago.
